How to Write a Good AI Prompt: A Simple Formula

By EG Digital Skills Training · Updated

A prompt is simply the instruction you give an AI assistant. Clear instructions get better answers, and a simple structure makes it easy to write them.

The five-part formula

  • Role: who the AI should act as.
  • Task: exactly what you want done.
  • Context: the background it needs.
  • Format: how the answer should look.
  • Limits: length, tone, language or things to avoid.

Before and after

A weak prompt is short and vague.

Write about our course.

A stronger prompt gives the AI what it needs.

Role: You are a friendly training coordinator.
Task: Write a WhatsApp message announcing a new Python batch.
Context: Beginners welcome, free demo class, evening batch.
Format: Three short lines and one call to action.
Limits: Simple English, under 60 words.

Tips for better results

  • Say who the answer is for.
  • Give an example of the style you like.
  • Paste the text or data you want it to use.
  • Ask follow-up questions and improve step by step.
  • Ask it to list any assumptions it made.

Always check the answer

AI can sound confident and still be wrong. Verify facts, names, numbers and dates before you use them. Do not paste private information such as passwords, student records or bank details into an AI tool.

Save prompts you reuse

When a prompt works well, keep it as a template and change only the details. This saves time and gives consistent results.
