HTML, CSS and JavaScript: What Each Does and How to Start
Every website you visit is built from three core technologies. If you are starting web design, knowing what each one does makes the rest of the learning much easier.
Think of a house
HTML is the structure: the walls and rooms. CSS is the paint, furniture and layout. JavaScript is the electricity and doors: it makes things respond when a visitor clicks, types or scrolls.
You need all three, but you learn them one after another.
HTML: the structure
HTML tells the browser what is on the page: headings, paragraphs, images, links, lists, tables and forms. Good HTML also helps search engines and screen readers understand your content.
<h1>Welcome to my page</h1>
<p>This is a paragraph.</p>
<a href="contact.html">Contact us</a>CSS: the look and layout
CSS controls colours, fonts, spacing and layout. Modern layouts use Flexbox and Grid, and media queries make a page adapt to phones, tablets and desktops.
h1 { color: #0369a1; font-size: 2rem; }
.card { padding: 20px; border-radius: 12px; }JavaScript: the behaviour
JavaScript adds interaction: opening a mobile menu, checking a form before it is sent, showing a slider or updating content without reloading the page.
document.querySelector('button').addEventListener('click', () => {
alert('Thanks for clicking!');
});A simple order to learn
- HTML until you can build a simple multi-page site.
- CSS until your pages look clean and tidy.
- Responsive design so the site works on a phone first.
- JavaScript basics for menus, forms and small widgets.
- WordPress or a similar tool for content-driven sites.
- Publishing: domain, hosting and basic SEO.
Practise with small projects
- A one-page personal profile.
- A landing page for a local business.
- A contact form with simple validation.
- A multi-page site for a school, shop or institute.
Building real pages, even small ones, teaches more than reading about code.
